Summary:
Although the world of music continues to rapidly evolve, music education within the United States has remained relatively untouched since the 1900s. This case study examines the current state of high school music education, including the demographics of the schools that house the programs, and the students who are and are not enrolled in music classes. This case encourages readers to consider the viability of including music business courses to reach students who have traditionally been underserved by music programs. Possible challenges to the inclusion of music business courses are addressed. The case serves as a call to reexamine the way music is taught and to create new opportunities within high school music programs.
