Summary:
Brian was new to town, new to the board of directors of the Oneota School for Children (OSC), and had just been tasked with creating and balancing the budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. He had spent many hours combing through the previous financial statements and budgets to figure out budgeting mechanics, and to see if he could find a way to balance the coming year's budget, but was at a loss. In the board meeting at which he presented an unbalanced budget, other members suggested increasing enrollments of some of the classes to balance it. On the surface, this seemed like a good idea to Brian, but he was not convinced it would solve the problem. This decision-based critical incident presents the data for the budget as well as the assumptions used in budgeting and asks the students to use budgeting and nonfinancial tools to decide what Brian and the board should do. This critical incident is most appropriate for undergraduate courses in introductory managerial accounting, cost accounting, or nonprofit management after flexible budgeting has been discussed.
