- Summary:
- Korry Electronics, an Esterline Technologies subsidiary, in Seattle, Washington was under time and cost pressures to relocate their manufacturing facility. The company was in downtown Seattle and had been negotiating with the Port of Seattle to keep their manufacturing operations in the city. After an 18-month failed negotiations, they were looking at facility locations within the surrounding 20 to 30-mile vicinity. The move affected employee daily commute times and family life, and the future success of the company. David Rhoden, the Chair of the Executive Committee for the Facility Relocation, was getting ready to meet with the Executive Committee to make the site selection. The committee was also responsible for the layout design of the new facility. The case provides students a unique opportunity to consider the tradeoffs between outsourcing overseas and domestic relocation, and apply decision making techniques in the facility relocation and layout design processes. This case can be used in the Facility Location and Layout Module in an advanced undergraduate or an MBA level Operations Management course. It requires broad range of considerations and collaborative team efforts in evaluating alternatives and formulating solutions.
