- Summary:
- Yonyou, incorporated in 1988, had initially established itself as a financial software provider before extending its scope to management software. It soon became a market leader in China. Around 2010, technology advancement became a game changer. The global industry of management software had gone through profound transformations from developing practical management software tools for enterprises to delivering a myriad of plug-n-play cloud-based services to small-and-medium enterprise users. Yonyou needed to establish a valid cloud-based service business model while keeping pace with the industry revolution. Every step along the way, it needed to determine how many resources to invest in the new model. In 2021, cloud services contributed over 55% to Yonyou's annual revenue, which was still growing. Yet looming behind this accomplishment were challenges both from within and from established international competitors. Wang Wenjing, chairman of Yonyou, was forward-looking and highly committed to the new technology. But he knew that the change of business model for his company would be time-consuming and painful. The most important decision in the change process had been the creation of its own platform and standards rather than simply adopting the industrial standards set and shared by international leading players. By taking that step, Yonyou was determined to establish its own business eco-system. As the chairman of a listed company and facing three years of stagnant revenue growth, in early 2022 Wang had to convey his firm belief to the public and be able to answer to investors in the capital market.
