- Summary:
- This case recounts the growth journey of the social enterprise GroundReality Enterprise Limited, operating in India. A personal tragedy led the founder to start a social initiative called PotHoleRaja, which aimed to make the world free of road potholes. He adopted a lean and methodical business model design that helped build awareness, engaged the larger community in its execution, and contributed toward a greener planet. His advocacy for the societal need for a proactive solution to prevent accidents caused by potholes helped him garner support for his initiative and new assignments. Further, his experiments led him to launch a new green road infrastructure product, GridMats, which is a sturdy and environmentally friendly green road infrastructure material. The global road infrastructure markets were promising and GroundReality had to be prudent in leveraging this market opportunity. Against this backdrop, this case explores social business model frameworks and new strategies such as licensing arrangements, joint ventures, and greenfield investments for the international expansion of a start-up social enterprise.
