The case discusses how, in December 2023, employees at U.S. pharmacy retail giants CVS and Walgreens formed The Pharmacy Guild in partnership with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Their aim was to help unionize retail pharmacy employees. Across the United States, pharmacists have been expressing concerns over short-staffing and high workloads jeopardizing patient safety. The Pharmacy Guild reported approximately 30,000 visitors on the first day the guild's website went live. Apart from the need for unionization, the process was also novel as, unlike the traditional unionization approach, interested members had only to fill out a form online. Pharmacies, especially Walgreens and CVS, apart from acknowledging concerns about pharmacists, were also actively investing in artificial intelligence (AI), where prescription filing, one of the critical roles of pharmacists and technicians, was performed by robots. Could AI replace pharmacists in the long run? What role did social media play in inspiring pharmacists to unionize?
