Summary:
This business case examines the role that organizational leaders should play in addressing instances of implicit bias in the workplace, as well as the purpose and benefits of implicit bias training. The case focuses on Starbucks, the international coffee house chain, and the company's response in 2018 to a high-profile case of discriminatory behavior by employees at one of its coffee houses. Implicit biases are unconscious, discriminatory beliefs a person may hold towards other individuals or groups, which can influence that person's actions and behaviors. These biases stem from our natural tendency to categorize things, including people, in order to make quick judgements based on past experiences, backgrounds, social environments, affiliations, and stereotypes. This case discusses the importance of specialized training to improve staff awareness of implicit bias and to help them identify when prejudicial attitudes or beliefs might be influencing their behaviors and decisions.
