Summary:
With the upsurge of digital point-of-sale (POS) systems, it became possible to seamlessly request a tip anywhere a transaction occurred. Quick-service restaurants (QSR) were among the earlier adapters of tip request prompts. In 2022 and 2023, during the sustained COVID-19 recovery, the restaurant industry struggled with staff shortages due to low compensation, lack of benefits, and lack of career advancement. Matt Gingles, the owner of a QSR called Burrito Shack, followed the national trend to request tips for in-store and take-out orders to improve employee take-home income. The addition of tip requests to customer transactions was encouraged by his POS company. While some customers gladly complied to show their gratitude, not all were supportive. With mixed feelings about tip requests, Matt had to decide how best to retain employees while maintaining a loyal base of return customers. This case will encourage students to consider the dynamics of the restaurant industry, the perspective and well-being of employees and customers, and who does--and does not--support tip requests.
