Summary:
This case is set at the Mulch Company, which produces a variety of landscape mulch products. The Mulch Company operates two divisions--Perma Mulch and Mother Earth Mulch (MEM). Perma Mulch manufactures mulches that degrade very slowly, if at all, from relatively stable materials like gravel, glass, and rubber. The focus of this case, however, is on MEM, which produces mulch from wood and bark. This case provides a hands-on activity where students experience the dysfunctional decision making that occurs when a company uses suboptimal allocation bases to assign overhead costs and when cost reports omit pertinent information or include information that is not pertinent to the decision context. The case also provides an opportunity to analyze how interrelated costs impact one another. Accordingly, the case provides an opportunity for students to practice decision-making and critical thinking skills. The context of the case includes the managerial topics of cost allocation, relevant costs, and performance evaluation.
