- Summary:
- The case of Kanye West releasing his contract via Twitter (now X) is unique because it was the first time a major label-signed artist had released their contract to the public. To gain an understanding of the contract and how it fares against industry standards, analysis and critiques of multiple points of the contract from multiple attorneys and professionals are synthesized. The points covered within this case study include the number of albums, advances and fees, approval rights, and ownership of master recordings. Once the contract is placed within the context of music industry practices, those practices are compared to sharecropping, which had strikingly similar contractual practices to those of the music industry. With scholars calling music industry contracts unconscionable, the case ends with a theoretical discussion of why the practices exist, how labels use autocratic leadership to control artists, and how artists are able to influence fans through the development of parasocial relationships. Students will consider solutions on how to improve the working relationship between artists and labels.
