Summary:
This case examines the unlikely rise of Nur Jahan, a 17th-century Mughal empress in the Indian subcontinent, and outlines some of the background and sociocultural factors that led to her advancement. This case will discuss factors that led to Nur Jahan's ascent, her personal characteristics, as well as the sociocultural context that made her success possible. Reviewing the life of Nur Jahan suggests that many commonly held assumptions about the past, including the role of women in Indian and South Asian society, should be reexamined. This case will help refine the orientalist understanding of the Mughal empire as being steeped in superstition and suppression of women. Students will be asked to examine what factors led to the rise of Nur Jahan and explain why such a feat (becoming the head of state) seems unlikely in many modern societies.
