Summary:
This case details an exposé of managerial challenges experienced by Ms. Jennifer Williamson, a young attorney and rising star at the Smith Hospitality Management Group (SHMG) - a hotel chain company owned and operated by the Smith family. She was on a fast track to assuming the SHMG's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) role and becoming the first CEO not biologically related to the Smiths. However, the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in the United States almost upended her career path. Consequently, as an outsider, she had to navigate a conflicting business decision advising owners of a family-owned business how to successfully implement the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandate. The authors provide two main practical contributions. First, presenting a real-life case, we offer insight into the challenges small family-owned businesses face; we illustrate how non-family member leaders in family firms navigate delicate duties while balancing conflicting stakeholders' expectations. Second, we outline the decision-making difficulties of an employee who on one hand is a leader trusted by her subordinates to act first in their best interest and on the other hand is an executive that business owners expect will advocate for, and prioritize, the company's bottom line overall. We believe that through this case, Sage Business Case readers can infer and value the intricate, inherent, ethical dilemma family-firm employees/leaders face when resolving different business needs.
