- This case study presents a phenomenological, ethnographic research methodology, designed to explore the friendship cultures and lived experiences of queer masculine individuals in Ireland through a queering of traditional research methodologies. Informed by queer theory, the case study discusses how this doctoral research challenged normative assumptions embedded in qualitative methods by adapting life history and dyadic interviews to foreground queer narratives and relational structures. It examines both the theoretical foundations and practical strategies involved in queering these methods, highlighting their strengths as well as the challenges that emerged, including instances of participant hesitancy to express emotions when interviewed alongside friends. Queer-informed approaches to ethics, including trauma-informed and emotionally supportive interview practices, and to expansive participant recruitment are also presented. The case study also examines the researcher's navigation of insider/outsider positionality through reflexive practice, reflecting on key moments in the field where critical self-reflection and the confrontation of personal biases were essential. Ultimately, the case study demonstrates how queering research methods can resist dominant narratives, support participant agency and well-being, and produce more inclusive, reflexive, and ethically grounded qualitative inquiry. Readers will learn practical strategies for applying queer methodologies in their own work, including critical reflexivity, participant-centered design, and methods that disrupt normative structures of gender, sexuality, and relationality in the research process
