Summary:
This Case Study highlights the practical and ethical considerations of a community-engaged mixed-methods study based in the United States that aimed to develop a novel measure of food insecurity during pregnancy. Our team of community and academic partners conducted focus groups (n = 43 participants), cognitive interviews (n = 30 participants), and online surveys with pregnant participants to operationalize and construct a preliminary self-report measure of prenatal food insecurity. We reflect on the utility of community engagement and cultural humility to promote equity in research with under-resourced pregnant communities, challenges and successes in developing and sustaining a community advisory board for pregnancy research, and ethical and logistical complexities of remote research with pregnant individuals. We hope that readers of this Case Study will learn conceptual approaches and practical strategies to inform their own culturally humble community-engaged mixed-methods and/or remote research with pregnant individuals
