Summary:
"The walled city of Bastam, located in northern Iran, along the most important trading and communications artery of the ancient world, has a population today of around 9000. It is one of the oldest settlements on the Iranian Plateau, and gained prominence in the 9th century, due to its proximity to the ancient Silk Road trade routes. The city is named after a long-ago resident poet, Abbas Foroughi Bastami. Its magnificent historical buildings, representing all five key periods of Islamic architecture, including Islamic monuments from the Ilkhanid period, have long attracted scholars from around the world. The city is also famous as a center for Iranian mysticism, including for the mystic Abū Yazīd al-Bastāmī, whose tomb is a key landmark there."-- From Heritage Broadcasting Service
