- Summary:
- "Career theories and intervention models rise to prominence to the degree that they effectively address important questions asked by people in society. Beginning in 1908, career practitioners' response to such questions has been to devise models and methods that link individuals' personal goals to the economic activities of their society. The postmodern era brought changes to the work world. Instead of a stable career bound in one organization, most people live a boundaryless and protean career in multiple organizations. This book conceptualizes the career construction counseling (CCC) process further, building on the groundwork laid in previous manuals. Career construction theory provides a starting point for describing, within a narrative conception of human functioning, the individual undergoing intervention and their career construction challenges. Innovations to CCC discourse were added with the conceptualization of clients' narrative transformation and description of the role of therapeutic collaboration in successful interventions. For this innovation, research was fundamental because it provided theoretical and methodological tools that operationalized the change in clients' narratives and allowed for their assessment. The book emphasizes importance of tailoring intervention approaches to clients' needs. It includes dialogue excerpts from real career construction counseling sessions, gives readers a moment-to-moment understanding of the counselor's decision-making. These dialogues also include practical comments that clarify the counselor's intentions, or describe performance errors that put therapeutic collaboration at risk. This book is the result of experiences accumulated over many years with colleagues, students, and clients who, directly and indirectly, influenced our thinking about CCC discourse and practice." --Preface (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved).
