Summary:
Balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) was introduced in the early 21st century and has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases. Compared with video capsule endoscopy—the other principal tool for small bowel evaluation—BAE offers direct visualization, real-time tissue sampling, precise lesion localization, and definitive endoscopic therapy in a single session. As BAE has become an essential procedure in daily clinical practice, there is an increasing need for a textbook on when and how to perform it and what technical factors should be considered. In response to these needs, this book aims to provide a comprehensive overview including the historical development of BAE; device characteristics; indications and contraindications; detailed insertion techniques for double- and single-balloon enteroscopy; therapeutic applications; use in altered anatomy and other challenging scenarios; and a richly illustrated atlas of representative cases.
