Summary:
For this tale of an outsider struggling to balance the dueling elements of beauty and evil in his life, Giuseppe Verdi supplied one of his darkest yet most tuneful scores--including the tenor's utterly catchy Act III aria, "La donna è mobile." In this radio broadcast from the 2022-23 season, a cast of consummate Verdi singers takes the stage under the baton of Maestro Speranza Scappucci in her Met debut. Baritone Luca Salsi gives a searing portrayal in the title role, a deformed court jester determined to protect his demure young daughter Gilda, sung by radiant soprano Lisette Oropesa. Tenor Stephen Costello is the lascivious Duke of Mantua, who destroys her innocence, with bass-baritone John Relyea as the murderous assassin Sparafucile and mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina as his sister, Maddalena.

Preludio
Della mia bella incognita borghese
Questa o quella
Partite? Crudele!
Gran nuova! Gran nuova!
Zitti, zitti moviamo a vendetta
Ella mi fu rapita!
Parmi veder le lagrime
Duca, duca!...Scorrendo uniti remota via
Possente amor mi chiama
Povero Rigoletto!
Cortigiani, vil razza dannata
Mio padre!...Dio! Mia Gilda!
Parla siam soli...Tutte le feste al tempio
Compiuto pur quanto
Si, vendetta, tremenda vendetta
E l'ami?...Sempre
La donna è mobile
Un dì, se ben rammentomi
Bella figlia dell'amore
M'odi!...Venti scudi, hai tu detto?
Ah piu non ragiono
Della vendetta alfin giunge l'instante!
Chi è mai, chi è qui in sua vece?...V'ho ingannato.
