- Summary:
- "This project presents the first annotated English translation of German scholar Albert Lindner's 1869 metatheatrical play, Der Hund des Aubri. Lindner's play stages Goethe's departure from the Weimar court theater in 1817 after a performance by a trained poodle. The plot depicts the "conspiracy" against Goethe, focusing on star actress Baroness Heygendorf's scheme to ruin her lover Duke Carl August's friendship with the theater director, writer, and privy councilor. To oust Goethe, Baroness Heygendorf brings a canine melodrama to the Weimar stage, knowing that Goethe-unlike the dog lover Carl August-could not tolerate this. This critical edition is prefaced by an introductory essay, which tracks the play's performance history and analyzes aesthetic debates surrounding animal performance. It also includes 18 images that bring nineteenth-century German theater and culture to life. The foreword provides important German political and cultural context, and a brief dialogue addresses the translators' methodology"-- Provided by publisher.
