- 本書共80卷，始于元至正十二年（1352）朱元璋起兵，終于崇禎十七年（1644）李自成攻克北京。編者把這三百年間他們認爲重要的史事，列成八十個專題，每題爲一卷，記述了這些事件的始末，卷末附史論。本書内容雖有缺略，但編者對于關係到"治亂興衰"的政治事件，如農民起義、宦官專權等記載較詳，爲我們研究明代階級鬥争、對外關係等提供了重要綫索。且本書的編成比《明史》早八十多年，綜合了多種明代史料，多可用于參證。本次點校以順治十五年築益堂本爲底本，并與庫本、江西書局本、廣雅書局本、崇德堂本、思賢書局本互校，擇善而從。
