- 本書共8卷，是清朝乾嘉時期著名學者章學誠的史學理論著作，與劉知幾的《史通》一起被視作中國古代史學理論的雙璧。本書旨在挽救當時的學風，主張在當時的宋學、漢學、經學外另外開闢出一條治學的道路，六經裏没有，可以取六經的用意做參考，即借古通今。本書還反映了章學誠在史學、文學等方面的成就，不僅批判了過去的文學和史學，也提出了"經世致用""六經皆史""史德"等編寫文史的主張，同時創立了方志學，建立了方志理論體系等。葉瑛先生1929年開始校注《文史通義》，花費近20年時間完成。校注用浙江書局本、《粤雅堂叢書》本等九個本子，補録了不少章氏原文，後經中華書局整理出版，較爲完善。
