- 本書共30卷，著述體例及論斷全仿荀悦《前漢紀》，由袁宏綜合多部史籍寫成，成書早于范曄《後漢書》。雖本書所反映出的封建正統名教倫理道德觀念，較之荀《紀》更爲强烈，但本書仍不失爲重要史籍，《通鑒》中部分日期的確定等，亦多依從本書，本書實與范書相輔相成，成爲研究東漢一代歷史的必讀要籍。本次整理，采用《四部叢刊》本，即上海涵芬樓影印的明嘉靖黄姬水刊本爲底本，除以南監本、龍谿精舍本、學海堂本爲校本外，吸收了歷代學人的校勘成果，且參考了《後漢書》，校訂了史實訛誤，較爲完善。
