Summary:
Narrative of the perilous crossing of the H.M.S. Pique from Quebec to Portsmouth in 1835. The ship departed Quebec on September 17th, 1835, having on board the Governor General, Lord Aylmer, and Lady Aylmer, who were returning to England from their posting to Canada. On September 22nd, the Pique struck a reef off Cape Forteau in the Straits of Belle Isle between Labrador and Newfoundland and became stranded for eleven hours during which she was heavily damaged and taking on water. However, the ship was freed from the rocks and it was decided to continue on to England. During the slow and dangerous crossing the Pique lost her rudder. A passing French frigate rescued her and towed her to Portsmouth. She arrived on Portsmouth October 17th.
