Biography/History:
Iași Hasidic rabbi, third in a dynasty (his grandfather, whom he was named after, was Israel Gutman (1820-1894, an associate of Menaḥem Mendel of Ruzhyn, and a descendant of Baʻal Shem Ṭov), who took over his father's rabbinate in 1929 following his death ; relocated to Israel with his brother, Menaḥem Gutman (1907-1984), circa 1955-1960 (author of the Hassidic encyclopedia Otsar agadot Ḥasidim).
Summary:
Letter to Hebrew educator and pensioner Solomon Kasswan, then living in Rîmnicu Sărat (formerly of Târgu Frumos near Iași) requesting that Kasswan assists a Mr. Shor, another retired educator seeking a government pension, to apply on an upcoming trip to Bucharest, where Gutman states that it is close to certain that the government would enroll the educators in the pension fund ; Shor was living from a communal pension which was too meager. It is likely that the unnamed official Shor was to meet in Bucharest was Anna Pauker ("ועל פיה יצא משפט של כל האישים התלוים בקהלות המקומות"). Addressed "D[omnu]lui Solomon Kasswan Profesor - pensionar R. Sărat" ; stamped "Rabin S. Gutman, Prim Rabin al Comunității Evreilor - IAȘI" (this was the stamp of Gutman's father) ; postmarked "REPUBLICA POPULARĂ ROMÂNĂ".
