Summary:
"Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) stands as a giant in the field of American art. He was one of the first to devote himself to pictorializing the history of Black people in America, the heroes of struggle against slavery as well as ordinary people living in his neighborhood Harlem, often within the confines of twentieth century racism. He used an expressive style of collage cubism to convey the strong messages in his paintings. His epic narratives and powerful visual statements are a testimony to his unique position within the history of American art. This catalog marks the first European overview of the artist."--Page 4 of cover
