- Summary:
- The unnamed migrant narrator of this novel embarks on a self-exploration about the secret life of her heart, both literally and figuratively. Born with a heart murmur that required a series of complex surgeries, she leaves Buenos Aires to study in Barcelona, where she puts down roots laboriously. Friendships and loves flow without too many complications until she becomes entangled with Alonso, a married man in an open relationship. What at first seemed like a cry for freedom gradually looks more like a trap from which it will be difficult - and painful - to escape. With reflective and sensual writing, Sofía Balbuena explores the light and shadows of sexual-affective bonds in this novel. In a world where everything is new and diffuse, the protagonist's status as a foreigner enables a territory of unforeseen possibilities far from any mandate, where pain and happiness, sadness and joy go hand in hand and give no respite.
