Summary:
"A recovery-based system of care is steeped in principles of dignity, hope, and aspiration. These are grounded in self-determination; namely, people describe for themselves their life goals and the mental health challenges and disabilities that interfere with them. People then decide among varied services, providers, and supporters (e.g., family, friends) who help them accomplish these goals. Shared decision making (SDM) is one method to do this. Briefly, SDM represents a helping relationship between people, their providers, and support system to help service recipients give voice to their goals and aspirations as well as barriers to them. The "shared" of SDM recognizes the existence of a significant body of information describing mental health challenges and corresponding interventions from which person-centered decision making might benefit. This book represents a broad and deep dive into basic practices that compose SDM. It dissects basic SDM principles from a broader social and psychological context to better understand self-determination. Three areas of interest poignantly represent the experience of self-determination by diversity and marginalization. First, consider SDM for people who identify as from collective cultures, such as the Chinese culture. Second, age at both ends of the continuum is key to experiencing SDM and self-determination. Third, marginalization and social disadvantage both affect and limit SDM. Finally, the book discusses how scholars and health providers can develop SDM interventions in mental health care-in collaboration with people with lived experience-and the role of community-based participatory research in this process." --Preface (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved).
