- Summary:
- "The book presents the proceedings of the British Academy Conference ‘Menstruation: Experiences from the Global South and North’ held in October 2021.The lived experience of menstruation is increasingly at the forefront of news and research given the rise in period poverty in the UK and debates around stigma and exclusion at an international level. The book focuses on the representation of menstruation and challenging menstrual stigma across a range of disciplines, geographic areas, and menstruators’ experiences. It brings together a range of experts from the Global South and North, including academics, activists and artists utilising a range of creative visual methods to explore the many ways that menstruation is represented within the media, policy documents and research. The book will explore the complexity of menstrual issues in a variety of locations to draw connections between geographical locations and disciplines. It will cover a diverse range of issues, addressing the wider concerns of ‘period poverty’, including menstruation education, menopause, environmental issues and sustainability, inclusivity, history, language and art, exploring the ways in which menstrual stigma is being challenged and addressed. It will also include research and initiatives that address menstrual discrimination including changing representations of menstruation in the media, medical profession and arts. Focusing on the diverse lived experiences of menstruators the book presents original research and insight into an important issue for the social sciences and humanities"-- Oxford Academic.
