- Summary:
- Tms BooK is based upon the biography of Charles Willson Peale which appeared in r 94 7as Volume 23, Parts r and 2, of the Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society. Theauthor owes a lasting debt to the Society for its encouragement and very material supportfrom those years to the present. Its readily granted acquiescence in the publication of thisnew version has given him the satisfaction of correcting some errors and omissions, and ofadding much that is new from his own and others' later studies of the Peales and theirtimes. For much aid in the revision, and for the final emergence of the work in a form soappropriate to an artist of the Enlightenment, his thanks are due to Thomas J. Davis, III,History Editor, and to the production staff of Charles Scribner's Sons.
