Der Band versammelt Beiträge ausgewiesener Kunsthistoriker zum berühmten Marienportal der Kathedrale Notre-Dame von Lausanne (erste Hälfte des 13. Jhs.). Aus verschiedenen Perspektiven werden die Entstehung, das ikonographische Programm, die geistesgeschichtliche Bedeutung sowie die Stellung des Portals im Kontext der europäischen Gotik, z. B. der gotischen Sakralarchitektur Englands und Nordfrankreichs, untersucht. So entsteht ein detailliertes Gesamtbild der 'Porta picta' von Lausanne als eines bedeutenden mittelalterlichen Kunstdenkmals.

This volume presents papers by renowned art historians on the famous Marian Portal of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Lausanne (1st half of the 13th century). The author analyzes the portal from various perspectives examining its origins, its iconographic programme, its historical significance and its status in the context of European Gothic, for example, of the sacred Gothic architecture of England and Northern France. Thus a detailed overall picture is built up of the 'Porta picta' in Lausanne as an important medieval artistic monument.
