Das Buch präsentiert dem historisch-literarisch interessierten Leser die Geschichte der Berliner Salons, von den ersten Salons um 1780 bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg 1914. Die Autorin zeigt, wie die literarischen, musikalischen, künstlerischen und politischen Salons das "geistige Berlin" ihrer Zeit mitprägten und wie sie Persönlichkeitskultur, Frauenbildung und Emanzipation verwirklichten und förderten. Mehr als 90 Salons mit Gastgeberinnen und Gästen aus unterschiedlichen Kreisen werden vorgestellt. Diese Sonderausgabe verzichtet auf den wissenschaftlichen Apparat. Neu hinzugekommen sind zahlreiche Abbildungen und ein Anhang mit der Beschreibung von Plätzen und Häusern, welche an die kulturgeschichtlich wichtige Institution "Salon" auch im heutigen Berlin noch erinnern. Diese Hinweise sind topographisch geordnet, so daß sie vom Leser für bequeme Spaziergänge durch die Stadt unmittelbar benutzt werden können.

The book presents the reader interested in history and literature with a history of the Berlin salons, starting with the first salons around 1780 until the end of the First World War in 1914. The author shows how the artistic and political salons were formative influences in the 'intellectual Berlin' of their times, and demonstrates how they implemented and promoted the cult of personality, feminine education and emancipation. More than 90 salons are presented, with their hostesses and guests from a variety of backgrounds. This special edition dispenses with a critical apparatus. It contains additional illustrations and an appendix with descriptions of addresses and locations in modern Berlin which are reminders of this important cultural and historical institution. The references are arranged topographically, so that they provide a ready guide for strolls through the city.
