AIDSGATE
Summary:
AIDSGATE, a protest poster related to the AIDS epidemic, is a portrait of President Ronald Reagan against a fluorescent green background. The president is shown with pink glowing eyes and the head tilted towards the right, his mouth open as if in the middle of a speech. The words "AIDSGATE" are printed in large pink letters across the composition.
Notes:
The poster was designed for a demonstration by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT-UP), which was held on June 1, 1987, in Washington D.C. during the International Conference on AIDS. The Silence=Death Project was the work of a six-person collective in New York City: Avram Finkelstein, Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Soccarás.
"This political scandal must be investigated! 54% of people with AIDS in NYC are Black or Hispanic ... AIDS is the No. 1 killer of women between the ages of 24 and 29 in NYC ... By 1991, more people will have died of AIDS than in the entire Vietnam War... What is Reagan's real policy on AIDS? Genocide of all Non-whites, Non-males, and Non-heterosexuals? ... Silence = Death"
