Books VIII and IX of the Historia animalium, which deals with the lives and activities of the animals, and specifically with their diet, habitat, reproductive lives, their social behavior and mental abilities, is discussed historically and philologically, and critically appraised via comparisons to early modern zoology, especially behavioral research.

Die Bücher VIII und IX der Historia animalium, die die Lebensweise und Aktivitäten der Tiere, insbesondere Ernährung, Habitat, Fortpflanzungsweise sowie Sozialverhalten und geistige Fähigkeiten betreffen, werden historisch und philologisch erklärt und durch Vergleich mit der modernen Zoologie, insbesondere der Verhaltensforschung, kritisch gewürdigt.Zweifel an der Echtheit einzelner Passagen sind nicht stichhaltig. Die Bücher sind durch Querverweise mit den übrigen biologischen Schriften eng verzahnt. Berührungen mit Theophrast beruhen auf keinem Konkurrenzverhalten zu Aristoteles, sondern bezeugen eine enge Zusammenarbeit. Die tierpsychologischen Ausführungen bedeuten keinen Widerspruch zu den Ethiken, die auf biologische Differenzierung verzichten können. Durch die Berücksichtigung der Forschungsreisen, wie sie von W. Kullmann herausgestellt sind, können auch spektakuläre Ergebnisse der aristotelischen Forschung außerhalb der festen Thematik zur Sprache kommen, z.B. der saisonale Ablauf des Fischlebens am Golf von Pyrrha, die Aalmästerei am Strymon oder die Fischerei im Schwarzen Meer. Aristoteles benutzt sogar Fabulöses und Mirabilienhaftes, hält sich aber von einer moralisierenden Humanisierung der Tiere fern.
