• Die Publikationsreihe ‘Religious Communities and Civil Society in Europe’ betrachtet das europäische Verhältnis von Religionsgemeinschaften und die Zivilgesellschaft, welche in jüngster Zeit an Bedeutung gewonnen hat. Angesichts der Entwicklung und Konsolidierung eines Konzepts von Zivilgesellschaft als eigenständiger Arena des kollektiven Handelns in der Gesellschaft, erhält die Frage der Positionierung der Glaubensgemeinschaften eine neue Dimension. In welchem Maße können und wollen sie über die rituelle Heilsvermittlung hinaus gesellschaftliche Partizipations-, Integrations-, Sozialisations- oder Interessenartikulationsfunktionen – und damit genuin zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben – übernehmen? Im Rahmen des der Publikationsreihe zugrundeliegende Forschungsprojekts gingen Autorinnen und Autoren unterschiedlicher Disziplinen in mehreren Europäischen Ländern der Fragen nach: Wie es um die Zuordnung der Religionsgemeinschaften steht und ob sie, möglicherweise sogar unabhängig von ihrem Rechtsstatus, der Zivilgesellschaft neuer Definition zuzuordnen sind? Der zweite Band dieser Reihe betrachtet an zwei Länderbeispielen Polens und der Ukraine das Verhältnis von Religionsgemeinschaften und Zivilgesellschaft im postsowjetischen Raum. Zudem werden evangelische Gemeinden in lokalen Zivilgesellschaften in Deutschland, so wie die Beziehungen zwischen Religionsgemeinschaften und Zivilgesellschaft zum Staat in Frankreich und Großbritannien beleuchtet. Des Weiteren wird das Verhältnis von katholischen Religionsgemeinschaften und der Zivilgesellschaft, sowie die sozialpolitische Rolle der Hermeneutik heiliger Texte betrachtet. Als außereuropäische Perspektive auf den Fragenkomplex wird in Form einer Fallstudie, der Aufstieg der politischen Macht der brasilianischen Evangelikalen dargestellt und religiös politische Ideologien am Bespiel des Islams behandelt.
• The seemingly vitalizing impact of religiosity on civil society is a research topic that has been extensively looked into, not only in the USA, but increasingly also in a European context. What is missing is an evaluation of the role of institutionalized religious communities, and of circumstances that facilitate or impede their status as civil society organisations. This anthology in 2 volumes aims at closing this gap by providing case studies regarding political, legal and historical aspects in various European countries. Vol. 2 provides some theoretical aspects, a report on the final conference, and case studies from Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Poland and the Ukraine, as well as a special chapter on Brazil and a Note on Religious Political Ideology.
