Die relationes des Q. Aurelius Symmachus sind amtliche Berichte, die dieser als Stadtpräfekt von Rom in den Jahren 384 und 385 an die Kaiser schrieb. Bekannt sind sie vor allem durch die dritte relatio, die den Streit um den Victoria-Altar thematisiert. Die übrigen Schreiben behandeln ein großes Repertoire an Themen: Sie berichten etwa von Versorgungsproblemen in Rom, der Ausrichtung von Spielen oder unqualifiziertem Personal, aber auch von einigen Zivil- und Strafprozessen. Auf diese Weise beleuchten sie eindrucksvoll die Verwaltungs- und Rechtspraxis jener Jahre. In dieser Ausgabe werden sämtliche relationes des Symmachus erstmals ins Deutsche übersetzt.

Symmachus’ relationes are official reports that he sent to the Emperor in 384 and 385 while serving as urban prefect of Rome. The letters cover a broad thematic repertoire: they report on supply problems in Rome, on the organization of games, on unqualified personnel, and on several civil and criminal trials. They present a vivid picture of the administrative and legal practices of the times.
