For the first time, this book extensively examines Nazi propaganda posters through the lens of art history. Containing 150 color illustrations, it reveals National Socialist design strategies, imagery, and themes; traces changes in design principles; and presents the major Nazi poster artists who helped shaped the image of the National Socialist Party over its various developmental phases.

Joseph Goebbels beschrieb lediglich die vorherrschende Situation im Straßenbild der Weimarer Republik, als er im November 1929 in seinem Tagebuch vermerkte: "Alles schwimmt in Wahlplakaten." Da das Plakat in der Weimarer Republik sowie in der Zeit der NS-Diktatur fixer Bestandteil des Straßenbildes war, trug es wesentlich zur Meinungsbildung, aber auch zur nationalsozialistischen Ideologisierung der Bürger und Bürgerinnen, bei. In der Publikation wird daher die ideologische Ästhetik des Nationalsozialismus untersucht, die Bedeutung, die Gestaltungsmittel und die Bildbotschaften der NS-Plakate analysiert und additive, suggestive Inhalte aufgedeckt. Zentraler Aspekt ist, mit welchen ästhetischen Mitteln dies geschah.
