Summary:
How did the political self-understanding of German-speaking refugees fleeing the revolutions of 1848/49 shape their transatlantic family lives? And conversely, how did their wives and children influence how they dealt with the revolutionary past? To answer these questions, this book goes beyond the prevailing interpretations of the Forty-Eighters in three ways: First, it understands their lives as migration biographies and explains the self-understanding and agency of those involved through the experience of transatlantic mobility. Second, it analyzes the diverse challenges and resources for mobility faced by these revolutionary families before, during, and after their flight. Third, for the first time, the study systematically examines the children of these revolutionaries. This opens up a perspective on the impact of the revolution that innovatively combines migration, political, gender, and generational history. Overall, the study demonstrates that mobility, family, and political self-understanding were closely intertwined and can only be understood in their interplay. -- translation of description on Amazon.com
