A social history of a small town in California, focusing on it as a community as opposed to a grouping of households, and on how this feature of community has changed from the town's founding in the late nineteenth century to the mid-1960s. The first section discusses the nature of the community hub and its role in the local social system, the agricultural patterns and system of social stratification, the community life and factional divisions, as well as the patterns of leadership up to about 1940. The second section focuses on the changes in the community after World War II.
