- Summary:
- "Dr. Drazin explains many surprising facts in this book. One is that Judeans was the name Jews had in ancient times because the people lived in the area of the tribe of Judah. The name evolved into the word Jew after 586 BCE. In 586 BCE, the Babylonians destroyed much of Judea and carried many inhabitants to Babylon. There, the Judeans encountered a culture far different from what they had known and what the Torah required. Like their descendants, they were influenced by what they saw, foolishly thought the masses around them had good ideas, and adopted many of them. The great rationalistic French Jewish thinker Rashbam paid attention to the wording of the biblical text and gave readers its actual meaning. In his commentary on Genesis 1:5, he explains that the Bible clearly shows that the day began in the morning, not in the evening. The verse states that God did creative acts during the day, followed by evening and morning, the end of the day. Jews initially followed the biblical timing. Most likely during the Babylonian exile in 586 BCE, the Judeans accepted the Babylonian practice of starting the day at sunset." -- Page 4 of cover.
