Summary:
In this discussion, Drs. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett and Diane Sanford discuss perinatal mental health, offering a working definition, sharing how they each entered this specialty, and underscoring the importance of factors such as social support and self-care for new parents. In the therapy demonstration that follows, Dr. Diane Sanford opens the session by inviting the client to share what she wants to discuss. The client, a mother, describes the unexpected nature of her pregnancy, the difficulties she faced carrying it to term, and complications during delivery. Dr. Diane Sanford offers supportive interventions at several points to highlight the role of social support, elicit the client's feelings, and explore self-care practices as well as the barriers to accessing them. In addition, Dr. Diane Sanford assesses the client's basic daily functioning, including concentration, attention, memory, as well as the client's self-concept as a parent. She also provides psychoeducation about normal infant crying patterns and explores the client's tendency to excessively search parenting information online, which contributes to heightened anxiety. Finally, Dr. Diane Sanford provides parenting resources to help ease the client's worry and suggests mindfulness as an additional coping strategy. A final discussion at the end of this video reviews key moments from the session, emphasizing factors such as the value of processing the birth experience and assessing for possible comorbid conditions in perinatal care
