- Martyn Whittingham, PhD, leads a discussion with Cheri L. Marmarosh, PhD, and Joshua DeSilva, PsyD, about group psychotherapy. First they introduce the benefits of pre-group preparation. In a pre-group preparation session clip, Dr. Marmarosh and Dr. DeSilva meet with an Asian American, adult male client who identifies as gay and is struggling with loneliness and social anxiety. They build rapport, explore his presenting problems, and set expectations for the group. The potential group member explores how his identity as a gay man has impacted his relationships and feelings of loneliness. Next, a clip of the first session of an interpersonal process psychotherapy group is presented First, four group members, including two adult women and two adult men, introduce themselves and their goals for the group, which surround relationship concerns. Dr. Marmarosh and Dr. DeSilva encourage the clients to explore how cultural identities (race, sexual orientation, religion) have impacted their interpersonal relationships. The group members validate one another. Next, the group members compare and contrast their typical patterns within relationships. Throughout the session, Dr. Marmarosh and Dr. DeSilva use process comments to encourage the group members to attend to their feelings and reactions in the moment. Finally, Dr. Whittingham leads Dr. Marmarosh and Dr. DeSilva in clip discussion of the pre-group preparation and group psychotherapy sessions, highlighting the importance of rapport building, expectation setting, and collaboration within group co-leadership
