- Summary:
- Keith S. Dobson, PhD, leads a session with an adult male client presenting with difficulty processing a past romantic relationship, uncertainty about the future, depression, and concerns about sense of self. The client discusses the ending of his relationship with his ex-fiancee and explores why the relationship ended. He highlights his history of self-harm, in which he was engaging during the relationship. Later, he discusses how this relationship has impacted subsequent romantic relationships. Dr. Dobson encourages the client to explore feelings of loss and "what ifs" surrounding his past engagement. Next, Dr. Dobson challenges the client by commenting on his tendency to push away negative emotions. Throughout the session, Dr. Dobson uses skills including validation, psychoeducation, and metaphor to help encourage the client to feel his emotions, to identify and brainstorm coping strategies, and to help the client process his future relationship goals
