Summary:
Louis Hoffman, PhD, meets for a first session with an adult, female client who has been experiencing a lack of motivation within the past three months. She explores how much of her stress and difficulty staying motivated stems from her role as a caretaker to her elderly aunt. First, Dr. Hoffman invites the client to explore her emotions about caretaking. He helps the client to dive more deeply into her emotions and brings her into the "here and now" of her emotional experiences by commenting on changes in her affect and body language. Next, Dr. Hoffman and the client connect her pattern of being a caretaker and prioritizing others to her early childhood experiences. Next, the client explores her anger surrounding a family member who is not sufficiently helping to care for the client's aunt. Dr. Hoffman helps the client develop insight about how her low motivation may be connected to the client's lack of caring for herself and allowing space for her own emotions. Finally, they explore ways the client could provide herself more care
