Summary:
Louis Hoffman, PhD, begins a first session with an adult, female client who presents with difficulties setting boundaries in relationships. First, the client explores her tendency to put others' needs and emotions before her own and her sadness when other's fail to reciprocate this care. Next, Dr. Hoffman attends to the client's "here and now" affect and language to help her more deeply explore her patterns. For example, Dr. Hoffman asks the client to reflect on what it is like for her to share her feelings with him. Dr. Hoffman expresses to the client that he feels closer to her when she shares her more vulnerable emotions. The client then explores her defenses and connects her discomfort in expressing negative emotions to perfectionism and fear that others will reject her if she does not live up to the standards she has set for herself in relationships. They discuss the punitive nature with which the client regards herself. Dr. Hoffman encourages the client to reframe her beliefs about boundaries from the punitive view that she "should" set boundaries to a more kindly acknowledgement of the boundaries she "wants" to set. Dr. Hoffman suggest journaling as a strategy to help to explore her wants regarding boundaries. Finally, Dr. Hoffman asks the client to reflect on the session and reiterates the importance of sitting with emotions rather than pushing them away
