In this video, Dr. Corinne Datchi demonstrates a focused and integrative approach to treating couples and families involved in the criminal justice system, one that emphasizes the unique concerns of this population. This integrative approach is based on the core principles of functional family therapy, an evidence-based intervention program that views the client as a relational system embedded in broader systems, and problems as behaviors that occur in stable relational patterns. In this therapy, individual behaviors, meanings, and emotions influence each other and the patterns of the relationship, and therapeutic change is an alliance-based process with phase-specific goals. In this program, Dr. Datchi demonstrates and discusses assimilative integration concepts to that guide the adaptation of functional family therapy for clinical practice with adult populations in criminal justice systems and couples in particular. Dr. Datchi demonstrates interventions such as reframing and empathic joining, and discusses her assimilative approach to couple therapy with Dr. Linda Berg-Cross.
