- Summary:
- "Basketball Trafficking follows the journey of Tito (a pseudonym), a young Black Panamanian basketball player with dreams of playing in the NBA. Tito's journey begins at a Féderation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) tournament and then moves to a high school in Texas, where he receives a high school basketball scholarship and migrates to the United States on an F-1 Student Visa. He quickly becomes a victim of "basketball trafficking," which Javier Wallace defines as the exploitative and unregulated migration of youth to the United States as part of interscholastic athletic programs which abuse the F-1 Student Visa program. Not only is Tito brought to the United States on a precarious visa status, but he is also subjected to poor housing conditions, lack of proper food and care, and exposed to constant verbal and psychological abuse by his coach. Basketball Trafficking is more than a sports story-it is an urgent account of how Black male athletic labor is policed, discarded, and manipulated for institutional profit. Wallace connects Tito's struggle to the legacy of Black West Indian labor on the Panama Canal and the longstanding use of sport as a means of migration within the AfroCaribbean diaspora. Drawing from historical migration patterns, personal narratives, and deep research, Javier Wallace situates Tito's experience within a broader framework of anti-Blackness, labor exploitation, and the unchecked power of the NCAA and US immigration system"-- Provided by publisher.
