Summary:
"Mickey Friedlander, PhD, facilitates a conversation with Hannah Levenson, PhD, about psychodynamic psychotherapy skills as applied to Dr. Hannah Levenson's work with a 22-year old female client presenting with relational concerns including difficulty expressing needs and being vulnerable within relationships. Dr. Hannah Levenson introduces review of this video as a tool to engage in deliberate practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy skills and to witness a corrective emotional experience within psychodynamic therapy. First, two clips from Dr. Hannah Levenson' first session with the client are presented. Dr. Mickey Friedlander and Dr. Hannah Levenson discuss the use of psychodynamic skills in these clips, including reflection of feelings, validation, and defense interpretation in regard to the client's relational patterns. In the fifth of six sessions, Dr. Hannah Levenson helps the client to connect with her emotions and to identify maladaptive interpersonal patterns which persist in the client's current relationships. Dr. Hannah Levenson supports the client in exploring the difficulty of attending to her needs within friendships and romantic relationships and reflects the client's fears about vulnerability. The dyad connect the client's maladaptive relational patterns to feelings of inadequacy in early life experiences. Next, Dr. Hannah Levenson encourages the client to deepen her emotional experience by speaking aloud: "I am a valuable person." The dyad explore the negative emotions about oneself that come to the surface for the client during this exercise and connect the client's low self-esteem to early life experiences. Dr. Hannah Levenson uses immediacy and self-disclosure to connect the client's interpersonal patterns to the "here and now" of the therapeutic relationship. Finally, the client speaks about the impact of the safety and care she feels within the therapeutic relationship. Following the session, Dr. Mickey Friedlander and Dr. Hannah Levenson discuss session clips and identify psychodynamic skills used by Dr. Hannah Levenson, including metaphor, immediacy, self-disclosure, psychoeducation, validation, interpretation, and more. They discuss the client's corrective emotional experience as a strong indicator of change in psychodynamic psychotherapy"
