Summary:
In this session, Samuel M. Turner works with a 32-year-old Asian woman with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This client's fears centers around contracting cancer as a result of contamination with germs, and her compulsions center around washing to prevent contracting cancer. Samuel M. Turner uses high intensity exposure therapy with response prevention. This session illustrates imaginal exposure through guided imagery and in-vivo exposure through touching feared objects. The goal of therapy is for the client to confront her core fear of contamination by cancer, and to tolerate her anxiety until her self-reported anxiety diminishes. Samuel M. Turner takes an active approach, guiding the client to approach her fears, taking periodic ratings of anxiety, and encouraging the client to persist despite intense anxiety
