Summary:
Clinical psychologist Dr. Don-David Lusterman conducts a fourth session with a married couple presenting with problems following the husband's extramarital affair. Using a family systems perspective, Dr. Lusterman identifies the wife's posttraumatic stress symptoms, and gauges her trust level and her hope for the relationship at the beginning and at the end of session. Dr. Lusterman invites the husband to respond to her need for reassurance and communication in rebuilding trust in the relationship. In turn, the therapist asks the husband to express his needs for reassurance and recognition of his efforts. The therapist explores the patterns of secrecy in both partners in their families of origin. Insight-oriented work reveals the husband's long-standing motivation to please others. The therapist assists the couple in understanding how such secrets can impair the relationship. Dr. Lusterman explains the process of the therapy in planning for supplemental individual sessions to assist the partners in addressing issues that could interfere with their joint work. He provides the clients with psychoeducational materials to enhance their understanding of the etiology and course of problems of this nature
