- Summary:
- In this video, Drs. Cheri Marmarosh and John Murphy discuss solution-focused therapy, identifying the goals and focus of this approach, as well as some of the techniques used. Following the discussion, they introduce a therapy session Dr. Murphy conducted with a client. In the session, Dr. Murphy opens by assessing the client's hobbies and what brought him into therapy. He also invites the client to think about the "miracle," which is a technique aimed at getting the client to imagine what life would be like if all of the client's therapeutic goals were met. A significant portion of the therapy session is spent clarifying this miracle and what thoughts, feelings, actions, and social relationships may be experienced differently, and how these may cue the client into the fact that something has changed. Towards the end of the session, Dr. Murphy asks the client about what may support positive change, and he engages in a subjective rating system of 0-10 to indicate how particular behaviors may impact his goal progress. After the session, Drs. Marmarosh and Murphy discuss and examine how Dr. Murphy applied solution-focused therapy, noting in particular the collaborative effort between the client and therapist and a focus on what happens after problems in clients' lives are resolved. The demonstration in this video features a client portrayed by an actor on the basis of a composite of cases
